Clock Stops Suddenly – The 4 Most Common Reasons

Often one gets as a watchmaker to hear that a customer has set up the current clock in the morning and that it suddenly suddenly stopped in the course of the day. The following post shows the four most common causes which lead to a sudden stop of the clock, and is intended to give orientation with regard to the costs of repair.

Clock Stops Suddenly - The 4 Most Common Reasons

1. A Screw Has Loosened And Blocks The Movement.

Even if it is surprising, this case occurs quite often: screws can be released by shocks (this can include slight hand movements). We have customers with whom we have to tighten all screws every three months, because the watches for mountain biking or golfing are allowed. The damage can be remedied in a few steps: First the screw is removed from the gear train and then re-tightened. Incl. Water resistance test is about 15 – 30 euros.

2. Dirt And Dust Block The Movement.

The clockwork is blocked by dirt and dust if the watch has not been serviced for a long time by a specialist company. If this problem occurs, a revision of the clockwork must always be carried out. The clockwork is divided into its individual parts, cleaned and oiled with a special lubricating oil. The costs incurred for this are strongly dependent on the respective make and clockwork. In general, the more complex the movement, the more complex and expensive the revision. A revision for a simple manual hoist can be obtained from about 100, – Euro. Costs of 150, – EUR forchronographs and about 200, – to about 300, – EUR for chronographs .However, there are also differences in the brand-specific: so you have to reckon with a repair of a Rolex with costs from approx. 275.- Euro.

3. The Lift Spring Is Broken Abruptly.

90% of all springs tear either because the material is subject to natural aging or because it has been subjected to too high a clamping pressure. When manual winding of manual elevators is achieved, a mechanical lock can be achieved at any time, and a special mechanism ensures that a further movement of the rotor does not tension the elevator spring further, thus preventing surgeing. If the clock is older, the maximum voltage can be sufficient to break the spring. The repair provides for replacing the damaged elevator spring. In any case, it is necessary to check whether the following wheels remain intact. The replacement of an elevator spring begins at 60.- Euro, but depends very strongly on the make.Since a break of the spring can also affect parts of the gear, one should make the choice of the spare spring dependent not least on the value of the watch.

4. The Automatic Elevator Is Defective.

That the automatic winding is defective can be due to many causes, eg the rotor axis is broken by a violent impact. As far as repair and incidental costs are concerned, it is difficult to make predictions here, since the damage removal is very different from the cause. Also, especially with older watches (eg old “Bumper” automatic works), repair is often difficult, since spare parts are either expensive or can not be obtained at all.

Tip From The Watchmaker:

If the watch is tested for water tightness every year in a specialist factory and is serviced every 5 – 6 years (revision of the movement), many problems can be avoided around the clock! As soon as the damage has occurred, we advise you not to carry the watch or even to shake it (for example, to start the movement again by force). Instead, the clock should be brought directly to the watchmaker, in order to prevent possible consequential damage.
